Day 4: First story/character

Today is Day 4 of my 30 Days of Writing About Writing. Enjoy, and feel free to join in!

Tell us about one of your first stories/characters!

Oh this is a fun question. I never named the first story I started working on. I was about 12 years old when I started it, and fascinated with faeries. The protagonist was a faerie girl named Kali who thought she was a human. Kali’s parents were the faerie king and queen of a black castle in the “faerie realm.” When Kali was a baby in the “faerie realm,” something terrible happened (don’t ask me what). Kali’s older brother had to flee, her parents were killed, and she was hidden in the “mortal realm” to keep her safe.

My original version showed Kali as a gothic 13-year-old girl with an abusive alcoholic father (not her real father, mind you). She took a walk in the woods to escape from him and found a black castle had randomly appeared behind her house. She ventured into it and found herself in the “faerie realm” where she is supposed to be a faerie princess. I was 12, would you expect anything less?

The second version featured an older, more mature Kali of 18 years of age. She just graduated from high school and was walking with her honest, caring father (again, not her real father). An arrow from behind kills her father, and a mysterious blond man helps Kali flee into, tada, a black castle that magically appeared in the woods.

Both versions shared Kali’s as well as the supporting characters Aidan and Ian. Ian was Kali’s brother (who I intended to kill) and Aidan was the mysterious blond man. Aidan swore both to protect Kali and to kill her. Meanwhile, Ian was trapped pretending he wasn’t heir to the throne. There was also a staff named Aisling, which my unnamed novel inherits, though without the name.

I never developed the story beyond that. I wrote about 50 pages of it and realized Ian and Aidan were the same person with different looks, and Kali just existed for the sake of existing. Hopefully, I’ve improved since then.

Care to share your first story or character?

Tomorrow’s question: By age, who is your youngest character? Oldest? How about “youngest” and “oldest” in terms of when you created them?
